Ordering the Best Coffee

Knowing what to order from a coffee shop can be daunting, even for the most seasoned coffee drinkers. This is because there are so many different types of coffees and coffee drinks available, each one with its own ingredients, ratios and flavors. Ordering coffee should be a fun and enjoyable experience, so check out some of the most common coffee drinks below.

Latte

A latte is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. The ratio of espresso to milk can vary, but it is typically made with one-third espresso and two-thirds milk. It’s also topped with a half-inch of milk foam. When ordering a latte, you can request it to be hot or iced, and it can also be sweetened with flavored syrups such as vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, peppermint or any other flavors the shop may offer. If you prefer to add sugar, you can request sugar packets or find them in a central location to be added later after receiving your coffee.

Cappuccino

A cappuccino is similar to a latte but it has less milk and more milk foam. The ratio typically includes one-third espresso, one-third milk, and one-third milk foam. Like lattes, cappuccinos can be hot or iced, and they can also be sweetened with sugar or flavored syrups.

Americano

An Americano is a coffee drink that is made with one or two shots of espresso and hot water. It is similar to drip coffee, but the espresso gives it a more intense flavor. Order it hot or iced. Sweeteners can be added to Americano coffees, but these are usually added after your coffee is crafted and received.

Espresso

Espresso is a type of coffee that is brewed under high pressure. It has a strong, concentrated flavor and is often used as the base for other coffee drinks. You can order espresso on its own or as part of another drink such as a latte, cappuccino or Americano. Due to the concentrated flavor, espressos are typically served in one ounce ‘shots.’ They will be hot and sugar can be added later to your liking.

Mocha

A mocha is similar to a latte but made with espresso, steamed milk, chocolate, and sometimes topped with whipped cream. The chocolate can be in the form of a syrup, powder or melted chocolate chips that are added to the drink. Mochas are typically sweet and rich, making them a perfect treat for any coffee lover.

Macchiato

A macchiato is an espresso-based coffee drink that is topped with a small amount of milk foam. It is similar to a cappuccino, but with less milk. The espresso-to-milk ratio is typically two-thirds espresso and one-third milk foam. Macchiatos can be ordered hot or iced, and, like other coffee drinks, they can be sweetened with sugar or flavored syrups.

Cold Brew

Cold brew coffee is made by steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for 12 to 24 hours. The resulting coffee is less acidic than traditional brewed coffees because the beans are never exposed to heat. This makes it a great choice for those who are sensitive to stomach acidity. Cold brew coffees can be enjoyed on their own or with added milk and sweeteners.

Nitro Coffee

Nitro coffee is newer to the coffee scene but is fast becoming a favorite. It is made from cold brew coffee that has been infused with nitrogen gas. Typically served from a tap, it has a creamy, foamy texture similar to some darker beers, but there is no alcohol found in this coffee. Nitro coffee is less acidic than traditional cold brew or brewed coffees, too, because the nitrogen gas prevents the coffee beans from coming into contact with oxygen. This type of coffee can be enjoyed on its own or with milk and sweeteners added.

Drip Coffee

Drip coffee is the most common type of coffee, and it’s what most people typically think of when considering coffee. It is made by brewing ground coffee beans with hot water and then filtering out the grounds. The result is a cup of coffee that has a relatively mild flavor. Drip coffee can be enjoyed on its own or with milk and sweeteners added, usually table-side or after the coffee is received.
