Find the Perfect Pair of Sneakers at Celebration Pointe

Tips for finding sneakers that fit.

How do you find the perfect pair of sneakers? It’s all about finding the right fit. Read on to find out what to look for when searching for these shoes and how to tell if it’s right for your needs.

Determine Your Foot Size

When looking for the perfect sneaker, or any shoe for that matter, you’ll need to make sure you’re looking in the right size. Whether you’re using a sneaker to walk, run, perform exercises or just for everyday wear, having the right fit will not only support you better and protect your feet, but the right size can also help you perform at your best.

You might think you know your foot size from a lifetime of shoe shopping, but several factors can change over time and you should measure your foot yearly to ensure the proper fit and support. Not only can different shoe manufacturers vary slightly in size, but your feet can also change size as you age, with the foot arch lowering or rising over time. Weight gain, especially during pregnancy, can also cause your foot size and length to change.

To measure your feet for sneakers, put on socks that you plan to wear while using the shoes and stand with one foot on a full sheet of paper or cardboard. Use a pen or marker to trace around your entire foot, holding the pen or marker directly up and down. Once traced, use a ruler to measure the vertical length of your foot in inches (or centimeters). This is your foot length. Then measure across the widest part of your foot tracing, which will give you your foot width. Repeat this for the other foot, and use the larger measurements to determine your sneaker size (it’s likely your feet measurements will differ slightly). Check with your shoe store, such as Nike or Skechers, to find out which size from specific manufacturers match your measurements.

Choosing the Right Fit

Once armed with your foot length and width, head to your favorite sneaker store to try on several pairs in person. A sneaker should fit snugly in the heel and midfoot area, but should not be tight. Your toes should have some wiggle room but not too much. While wearing the shoe, check for the proper width by placing the width of your thumb next to the inner ball of your foot. A good fit allows a full to half-thumb width of space between your foot and the edge of the shoe. Remember that as you walk and run, your foot hits the ground harder than when you’re simply standing in the store trying the shoe on. As it does this, your foot needs extra space and cushion for support and protection.

To further check shoe sizing, your heel should stay in place while holding the back of the shoe down and raising your heel.

Tip: Sneakers used for running, walking and other exercises will likely be about a half size larger than casual shoes.
